Initially funded by Mackay Sugar, this gateway will direct Australian South Sea Islander people to a range of relevant organisations providing support and services, and will provide a central portal to promote community activities and events.
This online initiative is designed to serve the interests of all Australian South Sea Islander.
Australian South Sea Islander's Flag
South Sea Islanders are descendents of islanders who came from the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and other Pacific islands from 1863 to 1904 to work as labourers in the Queensland sugar industry.
After extensive community consultation the flag was designed in 1994. The flag was formally adopted in a ceremony in 1998 by the Australian South Sea Islanders United Councils to represent this distinct, and culturally specific group of people.
The black panels symbolise the people standing strong and the continuity of their traditions, the blue represents both the sea and the sky and gold the sun, whilst the green is for the land and the islanders contribution to agriculture
