The Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation (the Foundation) was established by the Queensland Government in 2001 following its formal recognition of Australian South Sea Islanders as a distinct cultural group. The Foundation is a trust fund established under the Queensland Community Foundation as a partnership between the Queensland Government and the corporate sector to create a permanent legacy for the Australian South Sea Islander community through the provision of university scholarships for Australian South Sea Islanders. An independent Board of Advice manages the Foundation and makes recommendations about attracting investment from the corporate sector and allocating scholarships. The Board consists mainly of members of the Australian South Sea Islander community, but also representatives from the tertiary and corporate sector.
